The Challenge

Deliver an advanced system that can withstand the demands of archival preservation

Built in 1964, Cox Auditorium was used mainly for the annual conference on public affairs. Looking to expand its usefulness, the college decided that a massive organ would be a welcomed asset. By the end of 1967, renowned German craftsmen completed the installation of the 32-row instrument spread over two manual keyboards and crankset with electric-slider traction. By 2002, it was necessary to restore and enlarge the organ via a robust initiative that would preserve the instrument for generations to come.

Since exacting humidification requirements were crucial to the proper operation of the organ, an innovative HVAC solution was needed to ensure its preservation.

Solution

Control humidification

We provided the necessary humidification required to keep the organ constantly within the required humidity values; especially challenging during winter operation.

OUR WORK INCLUDED
  • Provide (4) electric canister humidifiers with modulating space and modulating high-limit control
  • Provide BAS connectivity to integrate with existing system
RESULTS

Now, more than 20 years later, the organ has never looked or sounded better.

We are so grateful for the humidification project that played such a major role in restoring stable intonation for our Casavant pipe organ!Dr. Joseph Van Riper,
