Replace existing chiller and boiler systems, bring ventilation up to code, and minimize building demolition
Serving as the area’s premier Jesuit retreat, this destination sees hundreds of patrons go through a silent retreat program every year. Their two main dormitories needed new mechanical systems; the boilers were aging, the chillers were dying, and the fan coils in the dorm rooms were over 30 years old. The water distribution system also needed major repairs.
In addition to offices and common areas that needed air conditioning, every room needed individual control. The new system had to be minimally invasive while using existing chases and wall cavities. Since the two buildings did not have a fresh air system, a solution was needed to bring in enough fresh air to each room per code requirements. Due to the age and significance of the buildings, exterior walls could not be touched, and the roof was off-limits due to its steep slope and weight constrictions.
Innovative units and advanced heat pumps deliver
Working with a local engineer it was determined that LG Heat Pumps with AAON DOAS Units would be perfect for this application. The DOAS units are a split AHU/CU type, with heat pump operation offering exceptional energy savings. The horizontal air handlers are located in the attic space with the heat pump condensing units on the ground. The LG Heat Pumps feature individual room control for every user and LG’s variable speed compressor technology allows a full range of operation for every room. Quiet operation of the indoor units were essential for sleeping arrangements. We tied it all together with a central control panel for each building, accessible remotely so that building managers can check the system from anywhere via the Internet.
OUR WORK INCLUDED
- Provide (3) AAON H3/CF DOAS Units for (2) separate buildings. The AAON units are heat pumps for heating in mild conditions. These provide neutral temp OA year-round to meet code requirements.
- Provide (22) LG Heat Pump Systems total. These Heat Pump systems serve every individual dorm room between two buildings and have individual and central control.
- Provide a cost-effective central control system to tie each building’s systems together and then tie both buildings together at a central location.
- Utilizing remote desktop technology, the buildings HVAC systems are accessible to the building manager wherever he may be (with an internet connection)
- Helping with an Ameren rebate for the building owner
