The Challenge

Achieve HVAC functionality and sustainability

To meet the demands of student housing, SCAD built a 250,000-square-foot residence hall with quick access to campus facilities. Meant to serve as a campus landmark, the current design provides 804 beds in typical two-bedroom, four-person semi-suites and 14 beds in studio single units, for a total of 818 beds.

Provide the required ventilation air for the occupants of this high-density building in a cost-effective and environmentally conscious manner.

Solution

AAON “all Electric” water source heat pumps with energy recovery

It is rare to see 50 ton water source heat pumps, but on this project AAON provided (2) of them and (2) more that were twice that tonnage.  These (3) water source heat pump units, coupled with an energy recovery—ranging in size from 50 to 105 tons—provide an unparalleled energy-efficient way to temper the raw unconditioned outside air through the extremes of our seasons.  All units were configured with all modulating compressors and hot gas reheat to control discharge air temperature and dew point precisely.

OUR WORK INCLUDED
  • Provide (4) Packaged AAON Water Source Heat Pump DOAS with
  • Piping Vestibules and Brazed Plate Heat Exchangers
  • Hot Gas Reheat for Dehumidification
  • Variable Speed Tandem Compressors and Digital Compressors
  • Enthalpy Energy Recovery Wheels
  • Polymer Coated Coils to withstand the corrosive ocean environment
RESULTS

Keenly utilizing AAON resources, the new residence hall was able to temper the required ventilation air for the building in an economical and sustainable manner.
